ESSIAC®: For Your Health
The story
behind the development of ESSIAC® is fascinating. In the 1920s, Bracebridge,
Ontario registered nurse Rene Caisse heard stories about an herbal tea used by
the Ojibway people. She got the formula from an elder and began to offer her
tea to patients in a clinic in Bracebridge. Although the medical establishment at
that time was skeptical, the reputation of Nurse Caisse's formula grew, and soon she was seeing patients from all across Canada.
Caisse accepted no payment for her work, only donations to maintain her clinic;
seeing people thrive was her greatest reward. Nurse Caisse died in 1978, but
there are statues honouring her in Bracebridge, and at the Canadian College of
Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto.
Natural Health
ESSIAC® is
still available today, made with herbs grown specifically for Essiac Canada
International, the company that now produces Nurse Caisse's tonic. These herbs
are cultivated without the use of herbicides or pesticides, and they're never
irradiated. Herbs are harvested at exactly the right time, to ensure maximum
potency. The herbs used in ESSIAC® are:
- Burdock Root. Burdock root (Arctium Lappa) has traditionally been used to help maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract and to help support a healthy immune response.
- Slippery Elm Bark. Slippery elm (Ulmus Fulva) contains large amounts of tannins and mucilage which are believed to facilitate the healthy elimination of mucus in the body.
- Sheep Sorrel Leaves. Sheep sorrel (Rumex Acetosella) is used in traditional folk herbalism to help cool the body. This herb helps support normal waste elimination in the kidneys.
- Indian Rhubarb Root. Indian Rhubarb Root (Rheum Officinale) is used traditionally in small amounts. This herb helps support normal waste elimination in the liver.
ESSIAC® Options
ESSIAC® is
available in three different forms: vegetable capsules, extract, and powder.
There is a recommended maximum and minimum amount for each of the three forms;
the maximum amount is recommended if you wish to receive the full potential of
the product. However, you can choose any one of the options based on personal
preference. Capsules are more concentrated than the other forms, and they're
perfect for travelling. ESSIAC® extract is easy to take, and requires no
preparation. Powdered ESSIAC® can be
made into a tea, which you can sweeten with honey.
A cautionary
note: due to its success, there are several imitations on the market. Be sure
that you're ordering authentic ESSIAC® supplement, manufactured using Rene
Caisse's original formula.
